About SIP

In the past few years you may have heard the buzz surrounding VoIP and that it can save you a lot of money. Well, we're here to tell you… it’s true. What you may not be aware of is the mechanism behind VoIP calling. That mechanism is SIP.

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol and is a replacement for the traditional telephone network. It allows users to make and place calls in the same manner as before, but uses a broadband internet connection instead of the telephone company’s cable. It also plays a role in providing calling features such as:
  • Call or media transfer
  • Call conference
  • Call hold
  • Caller ID
  • Direct Inward Dialing (DID) numbers

What this means to you is a lower monthly cost per line with better features. All your equipment needs is a single broadband internet connection for your transport and a SIP card in your phone system to connect to the circuit. One thing you will need to note is that SIP does not support alarm lines or credit card readers. While fax is supported on SIP, it does not have quite the reliability we would like to see at the time of this writing; however, this will change in the future.

SIP Providers are analogous to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). They are the company responsible for putting the network telephone traffic on the broadband internet and sending the signal to your building. As far as SIP providers go, the old adage of, “you get what you pay for”, still rings true. Some providers are simply better at providing high-quality service and features than others. Since your company’s reputation rides along with the quality of your signal, it is best not to scrimp on this despite the temptation of reducing costs as much as possible. We can help you determine the best provider for your needs.
