Designing a Structured Cabling System for Voice and Data

VoIP has reached a level of maturity and usage. More than 40% of all businesses in the US are using VoIP. VoIP uses your data networking as a transport mechanism. Any work you do on your internal networks must include the requirement of VoIP.

If you are involved in a project that involves designing of structured cabling system for voice and data, it is important to take up the basics first. Prior to getting started with cabling, it is important that you give due emphasis to the design component. While carrying out the designing work for structured cabling, you need to determine whether the cabling will support IP telephony or not. You need to ensure that low-voltage wiring supports high speed data and voice signal transfer and also provides the necessary bandwidth for Internet connection. It is very common to find Category 5 cable for the structured cabling systems that provides both the bandwidth as well as support for voice and data networks.

There are basically two components that you need to look at while designing structured cabling system for your office network – the voice and the data component.

Providing the perfect design for the voice component
The options available for voice components have gotten more varied over the last two decades. Thus, just the good old PBX system no more suffices the needs of a business house. Earlier the PBX found a fixed place at most of the offices and required manual intervention for routing calls, receiving voice mails and other telephony options. But now this old technology has been replaced by the virtual PBX – it has all the features of a physical PBX system and also a large number of additional benefits. Most important, it offers a virtual platform to manage the calls (only if you have the right kind of cabling system installed at your office). Virtual PBX system work in tandem with the Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP connection, which manages it in a virtual environment.

Structural cabling system takes care of the voice component and creates the perfect cabling network to support your voice network. All the voice signals are transmitted without any loss, which results in seamless communication.

Structured cabling for the data component
The data system varies with the business operations of an office but there are a few things that remain the same. For instance, the structured cabling system to support the data component at a medical facility will be different from the data component at a warehouse. The ideal data component should be supporting activities like accounting, administrative and managerial.

You must design the cabling system that will support the right business model where there may be needs to connect to a remote server. Data on the cloud is also becoming popular, and this has to be accounted for. If you are designing the cabling system for an organization where the employees need to log on to the communication system from remote locations then it is imperative that you create a high bandwidth supporting cabling system. You need to design a cabling structure that takes care of network redundancy issues efficiently and creates a network that supports both voice and data system with ease.

Future Planning
Majority of the business owners tend to make a common mistake of thinking only of the present data and voice connection needs. Though it is important that the immediate needs are met efficiently, but one must also consider the future needs while designing structured cabling network for voice and data. It is imperative that you consider the voice and data needs that might crop up in the next 2 to 5 years. Thus, you can create the cabling that offers the perfect flexibility required handling of high quality data and voice signals. You need to find a competent cabling provider to create the necessary structured cabling for the voice and data.

It sure is nice to know that a structured cabling system creates the perfect cabling network to support the voice network and voice signals will be transmitted without any loss. Our company is looking for a cable provider for our system so that it will be easier for its employees to access information in our database as well as to be able for them to reach out to international clients through calls. I'll share this information with them so that they'll get in touch with a company that will help them have a structured cabling system and provide the service that they need.

That's good to know that a company needs to check if their low-voltage wiring supports high speed data and voice signaling transfer, and has the bandwidth necessary for their internet connection. This is helpful since a company may try upgrading their system but may not be able to due to the wiring they have. It would be good to find a company that can inspect the wiring to determine if it can support the new connections so they can get the wires replaced if needed.

It makes sense that you are looking to get structure and security. This is a great way to make sure that you are getting the most out of your data cabling. She might like knowing that as she looks for a service to give her a higher bandwidth.

Thank you for pointing out that structured cabling could be different for a medical facility than it could be at a warehouse. My boss has been thinking about updating the data cabling at work. It's good to know that different businesses need different kinds of structures.

I now understand that I need to hire a data network wiring service so that I can get structured cabling for my business. It seems to be important since it will support the business model that I have, so I might consider hiring someone. If I were to choose, I think I'll hire an expert who is great at setting up administrative activities so that all the computers can be monitored in my company easily.

I've noticed that when I visited a company the other day, their network databases had so much cable that it looked confusing. You're right about saying that they should design the cable system to support their business model to allow for better operations. I think they should hire a service to help them out with that since it's a technical job.

My friend is getting a business put together. It makes sense that getting the right cabling put together would be important! I'll make sure that he knows to work with a professional to ensure that the cables are organized properly.
