Phones can be a real pain in the neck. Really. I’m not kidding. One of the most common causes of neck pain in the work place (in an office environment, anyway) is from repeatedly cradling a telephone headset between your head and your shoulder. Oh sure, you can put one of those puffy things on the handset and that may work for awhile. But, sooner or later, the pain will come back.
The reason why we do what we do is to make ourselves more efficient by talking on the phone and using both of our hands to perform some task at the same time. Cradling the handset once in awhile is not a big deal; however, if you’re on the phone all day and doing so, then you’re asking for trouble.
A simple remedy is to use a telephone headset. That way you can be on the phone and maximize your efficiency by being able to use both hands to perform other tasks. By keeping your head upright, and not having to provide tension to keep the handset clamped to your shoulder, you’re eliminating the strain on the muscles that can cause neck pain. Ask any chiropractor; they’ll tell you the same thing. One more thing, if your supervisor starts to gripe about the cost of a headset, ask that person what the typical cost of an L&I claim is.
In the next post we’ll talk about the major types of headsets and their advantages/disadvantages. Until next time!
