There are two main types of headsets that you can use with your telephone, corded and cordless; each has their advantages and disadvantages. Today we'll look at corded headsets.
Corded headsets, as you might have guessed, have a cord running from the headset top to either the telephone itself or to an amplifier that sits on the desk next to the phone. Most corded headsets use a Quick Disconnect (QD) connect that allows you to quickly disconnect the cord coming off the headset top from the cord that goes to the phone or amplifier.
The main advantages of a corded headset is that they are generally less expensive, have a little clearer sound than cordless (although the difference in sound is beginning to be less of an issue), and are usually lighter.
One disadvantage is that there is a cord that is tethering you to the phone. It restricts your head movement a little and your range from the phone. It also may tend to sweep everything off your desk if you move too far and wide. Another is that you have to come back to the phone to pickup any incoming calls or to disconnect the call that you are on.
In the next post we'll look at cordless headsets and what they offer. Until then!
